Making your living room exactly what you want it to be can be a challenge. Even the seemingly simple task of decorating it can take some time (although we do our best to make it as easy as possible, with our range of stretch sofa covers to give you plenty of options!) But just as important as styling – perhaps even more so – is how you arrange your furniture to ensure you can get the most out of your space. This week, here are our top tips to make it easier!
Mirror in a room at home
Choosing a focal point is really important for any space. Some focal points are completely natural; windows or prominent fireplaces are the most common types of focal points. However, it could just as easily be an intriguing piece of furniture, a piano… And if your room doesn’t seem to have a natural focal point, you might consider creating one. The key is to make sure you choose one and stick to it, because having too many can make the space feel cluttered and overcrowded.
This may seem counterintuitive, but trust us on this! You need to give your furniture some breathing room by leaving a small gap between the back of each piece and the wall it’s placed against. Placing them against the wall can make the entire space look a little cramped and uncomfortable.
Designer style living room
This is perhaps one of the most important pieces of advice we can give. Humans are social creatures above all else, and your living room is a space where you’ll want to relax, unwind, and share your day with family and friends. So it’s a good idea to consider this when arranging your furniture. Ideally, you’ll want furniture to be close enough together that people can comfortably chat without raising their voices – otherwise, it can get very uncomfortable if everyone is shouting! If you have a particularly large room, you could even create several of these conversation areas.
Balance is one of those underappreciated things that you don’t really miss until it’s gone! When arranging your furniture, you need to think about its size and placement, as well as the “weight” of its distribution in the room. For example, you don’t want to group all the furniture, large or small, in one area or on one side of the room. This can create a subtly unsettling visual effect, which is definitely not the kind of thing you want in your living room!
To avoid this, remember to experiment with different shapes, colors and sizes of your furniture, until everything feels seamless and comfortable.
Traffic considerations
When arranging your furniture, you also need to think about how people move around your space. You don’t want people tripping over each other! The best way to do this is to leave a few feet between your coffee table and your sofa, or between your chairs. It’s a good idea to think about how many people will be in the room on average at any given time, and what they might be carrying, whether it’s toys, games, laptops, food or drinks. You don’t want them flying around!
These are just a few of our ideas, of course – you may already have some of your own! We’ll leave it up to you to elaborate. As for us, we have a huge range of colours for you to choose from here at Housse Design, giving you plenty of options to give your sofa a whole new personality. You can even change the colour of your sofa throughout the year, changing its style according to the seasons! You can choose sofa covers in every shade, from red and orange to blue and yellow , and so much more!
